You Think Everything Has to Be White
“White sheets are classic, but color adds visual appeal,” Kaye says. Play around with pieces in different shades of the same color (e.g., moss shams, sage sheets, and an olive duvet) for a tonal effect, or buy a bright set of sheets and stick with your white duvet if you’re feeling color shy.
You Assume a Higher Thread Count Is Better
More isn’t more when it comes to the number of threads per square inch, Kaye says. “Once you pass 800, the manufacturer may be using thinner threads, which means a lower quality sheet,” she explains. If you’re shopping online and can’t feel for yourself, be sure to at least read the reviews.
You Haven’t Considered What Type of Sleeper You Are
Do you tend to wake up sweaty or shivery? Percale works well for hot sleepers, and sateen for those who run cold. If you and your partner are one of each, go for ultra-breathable linen, which can keep you both comfortable year-round. —H.B.
