AMAZON | Cassandro
COMEDY-DRAMA Gael García Bernal plays Saúl Armendáriz, a real-life star—and an irresistibly original one—in the world of Mexican wrestling. Too small to make any headway in the ring (the big guys fling him about as if he were a stuffed toy), the gay Armendáriz reinvents himself as an exótico, a flamboyant crowd-pleaser named Cassandro. In our RuPaul era, Cassandro is fairly conservative-looking, something like Richard Simmons with a taste for shiny fabrics. But the movie is a wonderfully affectionate portrait, and there’s real joy in Bernal’s glow-up performance. (Launches Sept. 22)
DRAMA Behavioral scientist Alec Mercer (The Flash’s Jesse L. Martin) is a respected academic who applies his insights into human logic—and illogic—to criminal investigations. (A catastrophic moment in his past, however, resists elucidation.) This is an old-school setup, nothing fancy, played with levelheaded appeal by Martin. (Sept. 25, 10 p.m.)
