While the words “Disney Files Editor” have appeared beneath my name on this page for the past 20 years, my technical title has evolved over these two decades to combine terms like “associate,” “marketing strategy,” and “manager,” with the presence and/or placement of a comma impacting everything from perception to paycheck. I’ve never been big on titles, so I rarely thought about –or-cared, frankly–how I was identified on the business cards we stopped printing back when I still wore a pager.
I did appreciate, however, that my leaders recently changed my technical title as part of an effort to better align “what I’m called” with “what I do.” My business card, if I had one, would now read “Senior Creative Content Manager.” I could do without the “Senior,” which I’m pretty sure just means I’m old, but the rest feels good.
I read recently that some companies put so little emphasis on titles that they invite employees to playfully write their own. That got me to thinking, what would I call myself if given the opportunity?
Looking at the variety of creative content I’m so proud to manage, a common thread emerged: magical minutia. Whether I’m writing or hosting, directing or producing, the end result is often a deep dive into details, examining layers of storytelling that discerning Disney Vacation Club Members tend to appreciate more than anyone.
So I guess my dream title would be something like “Disseminator of Details” or “Messenger of Minutia.” “Courier of Curiosity” or “Ambassador of Artful Expression.”
And if I were to pick an issue of Disney Files Magazine to debut my new title, it might very well be this one. The pages ahead take a fine-tooth comb to visual details (from The Cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort to Voyageurs’ Lounge at Disney’s Riviera Resort) and artist inspirations (from the design of the first Storyliving by Disney community to the music of a Pixar classic).
Minutia? Yes. Magical? Also yes. And you can trust me on that. I am, after all, your (Senior/elderly) Disseminator of Details. Your (aging) Ambassador of Artful Expression. And my magnifying glass is forever at your service (both because I dig the details…and because my eyesight isn’t what it used to be).
Keep an eye out (and mark your calendar): Watch disneyvacationclub.com for details about the annual condominium association meeting for all condominium associations, scheduled to take place on Dec. 12 at Disney's Contemporary Resort.
Welcome home,
Ryan March
