The Vassar College men’s volleyball program has consistently ranked among the best in the country over the past several years, but the 2023 team raised the bar for excellence.
The Brewers compiled their longest winning streak in history—26 games—on their way to their second United Volleyball Conference championship and fourth appearance in the Final Four of the NCAA Division III tournament. The team was ranked first in the nation for the first time ever and defeated longtime rival Springfield College for the first time in 21 years.
Three Brewers—Gavin van Beveren ’23, Andrew Kim ’23, and Jacob Kim ’24—were named First Team All-Americans. And Head Coach Richard Gary was named Division III National Coach of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
Gary said that while he and his players were disappointed with their loss to North Central College in the semifinals of the national tournament, he viewed the season as another important step in establishing Vassar as a volleyball powerhouse.
“We were ranked #2 in the nation when COVID shut us down in 2020, and it took us a while to get back to where we want to be,” Gary said. “But we’ve established ourselves as a niche program that combines elite athletic performance with elite academics.”
