The Vassar community lost two influential emeritus faculty members this year with the passing of Norman Hodges, Professor Emeritus of History and Africana Studies, and Raymond Cook, Professor Emeritus of Dance.
Norman Hodges, pictured right, graduated summa cum laude from Fisk University and earned a PhD in Africana studies from Columbia University. He was the first tenured Black professor in the departments of History and Africana Studies (previously called Black Studies) and taught courses on African American, African, and Caribbean history from 1969 until his retirement in 1998.
Teaching at Vassar at the inception of the Africana Studies program (which he directed twice), Professor Hodges left an indelible, positive mark on Vassar, its students, and the community. He was tireless in his advocacy and support for Black students and the full integration of Africana Studies into the curriculum.
Professor Hodges was called upon by President Jimmy Carter to serve on a panel on U.S. Relations and Africa, specifically contributing his views on future American policy toward what was then Rhodesia. His pathbreaking research focused in part on what he described as “the relentless spread of pernicious neo-colonialism throughout many areas of the African continent.”
Professor Hodges also called for “greater understanding of the common experience of oppression, exploitation, and sufferance which binds all blacks in Africa and in the diaspora together.” Following his retirement, the College created the Norman Hodges Lecture Fund on Race and American Law.
Raymond Cook, pictured right, was an Australian-born ballet and modern dancer and expert on Labanotation, a notation system by which dance movements are recorded in the form of symbols. He attended the Juilliard School, where he studied with José Limón and Anna Sokolow. His work led him to restage dances around the country and across the globe.
During his years at Vassar (1981-1996), Professor Cook originated the Vassar Repertory Dance Theatre (VRDT) and staged several iconic dance works with VRDT students. He was an inspiration and mentor to many and continued to play an important role in their lives after graduation.
Those who would like to honor Professor Cook are invited to commemorate his legacy with spoken tributes, photos, and video during a memorial event on October 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the Frances Daly Fergusson Dance Theater, Kenyon Hall. A selection of works that he staged for his students will be performed by current VRDT dancers. A reception with light refreshments will follow. Please RSVP by September 25 to Peggy Cheng ’93 (peggycheng@gmail.com) and indicate whether you’d like to speak at the memorial.
