Not everyone plays golf strictly by the Rules. Even fewer play solely in sanctioned tournaments where every putt must be holed, Rules Officials roam the fairways and scorecards are vetted and signed after every round.
Intense competition is enjoyable for many, but a much larger group of golfers want a more relaxing experience. The vast majority of TGA Members just want to tee it up at nice courses, play causally (pick up those pesky 3-footers!) and, more than anything, just have fun.
If you fall in the latter group even some of the time, we hope you’ll take part in a Fun Golf event in 2018. Now in its fourth year, our Fun Golf Series caters to recreational golfers who care more about scoring a good deal to play a great course than counting all their strokes. Fun Golf is exactly what it sounds like, and it couldn’t be any easier to sign up to play some of the state’s best courses and meet new people.
The 2018 Fun Golf Series features 15 different Play Days, most of which are one-day events. There’s also a prize-filled, multi-day Texas Shamble scheduled for Nov. 16-18 at Riverhill Country Club in scenic Kerrville. These events are open to every kind of golfer – men, women, TGA Members and non-Members – with all different levels of experience. Fun Golf events have team and individual contests with gross and net winners, but the competitions are never mandatory.
Courses for the this year’s slate of Fun Golf outings include Las Colinas Country Club, both courses at TPC San Antonio, Walden on Lake Conroe and Old American. The Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio, which has hosted the PGA Tour’s Valero Open since 2010, is set for March 2. Old American, which will play host to the Volunteers of America LPGA Texas Classic in May, is the site for the TGA Fun Golf Play Day on Aug. 16. Both of these Fun Golf outings give everyday amateurs chances to experience the same courses the professionals play.
If playing more golf was one of your New Year’s resolutions for 2018, then Play Days are the best place to start. Fun Golf Play Days are scheduled across the state of Texas throughout the year. Currently, there are six confirmed sites in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, three in the San Antonio area, four in the Houston area and one in Austin. Plans to create even more Fun Golf opportunities this year also are in the works.
You don’t have to be a TGA Member to play in our Fun Golf events, but members do receive discount prices. Keeping score is optional, so there’s no need to feel any pressure on the first tee. Prizes are awarded to the top gross and net finishers at each event, but having fun and enjoying some great company is always the priority.
The crown jewel of the Fun Golf Series is the Texas Shamble, which features three rounds of golf along with daily drink tickets, contests and prizes, three meals and awards for top finishers. The format for the Texas Shamble is a two-person shamble with male, female and mixed flights. A senior tee will be added in 2018 for players that are 62 years and older.
We hope to see you at an upcoming Fun Golf event. You’ll get to play a great course at a discounted rate and make some new friends. What’s more fun than that? For more information on Fun Golf events, click here.
