The TGA’s Fun Golf Series schedule always is highly anticipated, and for good reason. With one of the best lineups in the history of the popular program, the 2023 season is shaping up to be yet another great year for passionate golfers around the state.
Highlighted by a multitude of new offerings, this year’s list of host clubs will make every type of golfer want to register for a Fun Golf event.
One of the coolest additions to the slate is a month-long “Architecture Series.” Three consecutive Fun Golf events in September will be played at courses designed by A.W. Tillinghast, a World Golf Hall of Fame member who is considered as one of the all-time greatest American golf architects. The Tillinghast courses included in the series are Cedar Crest Golf Club in Dallas (Sept. 10), Corsicana Country Club in Corsicana (Sept. 17), and San Antonio’s Brackenridge Park Golf Course (Sept. 26).
Brian Fry, the TGA’s Manager of Outreach and TGA Foundation, implemented the architecture series idea after learning about it from a colleague at the Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP), who facilitate something similar up north.
“I thought the idea was pretty cool,” Fry said. “I thought — we’ve got several different famous golf course architects who left their mark in Texas that we could feature, too.”
Another big update to the Fun Golf schedule this year is the addition of what was formerly named the Texas Stableford Handicap. This event was previously conducted under the competitive TGA championship umbrella, but it will now receive a new name and format and will be played as a Fun Golf event.
While the specific details of the new Fun Golf event are still being finalized, the date and venue are official. It’s set to be played Nov. 10-13 at Riverhill Country Club in Kerrville, the longtime host of the former Texas Stableford Handicap.
Lastly, there are several first-time clubs on the schedule for 2023 that will introduce Fun Golf participants to new places to play.
“We are changing the game a little bit with some of these play days and hosting them at clubs we’ve never been to before,” Kelly Kilgo, Managing Director of TGA Foundation/Outreach, said of what she’s most excited about for Fun Golf this year.
A few of the new venues that golfers will get to experience are Squaw Valley Golf Course in Glen Rose, Panorama Golf Club in Conroe, and South Shore Harbour Country Club in League City.
