The best junior golfers in Texas compete on the Legends Junior Tour. It makes sense, then, that the biggest LJT events – the four major championships – take place on some of the best and most challenging courses in Texas.
Victoria Country Club down in South Texas is a new venue for the LJT, for example. The Texas Girls’ Invitational will take place at the Joe Finger-designed layout on Feb. 18-20. Although the LJT competitors have not seen the well-groomed, tree-lined parkland course, it does have recent history with the TGA. Austin’s Brian Comegys, a former LJT stalwart, won the South Texas Amateur at Victoria CC last summer by five shots.
The recently renovated Tempest Golf Club in Gladewater will play host to the Texas Cup Invitational for the first time in March. Formerly Southern Hills Golf Club, Tempest GC was reimagined by architect Jeffery Brauer in 2018. The East Texas course, located just off Interstate 20 outside of Tyler, previously hosted the 2022 North Texas Four-Ball and the 2021 Texas Junior Golf Alliance Invitational, as well as a U.S. Amateur qualifier that summer.
With dramatic elevation changes not often seen in major metro areas, Tempest GC’s winding fairways are framed and protected by massive pine trees and water features. It’ll provide a worthy test for the top young golfers in the state, as will the other LJT major championship venues.
