With the end of the year only a few weeks away, it’s time to set our sights on 2022. This past year provided thrilling finishes, inspiring storylines and a distinguished list of players who earned their way into the winner’s circle. There’s no reason to think next year will be different. The TGA again looks forward to conducting best-in-class competitions for its members and writing yet another incredible chapter in Texas golf history.
With thoughts and expectations transitioning to another exciting season, here’s a quick look at a handful of Major Championship venues on deck. Each of these courses will provide their own unique design features and challenges to the top players in the state. The 113th Texas Amateur will bring its rich history to Willow Brook Country Club in Tyler for what will surely be another storied championship week. Adding to the excitement, Willow Brook will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2022 with the staging of the Texas Amateur highlighting its yearlong celebration.
Since its debut in 1976, the Texas Four-Ball is always one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the Men’s schedule. 2022 figures to be equally so as the championship will be held in the beautiful Hill Country at Comanche Trace in Kerrville. Hosting its fifth Texas Four-Ball, and first since 2011, Comanche Trace will once again provide a true test of skill for the state’s best in this highly competitive event.
After celebrating the Women’s Texas Amateur Centennial Championship in 2021, the 101st edition will take the state’s top-ranked players to the heart of the Space City at the Golf Club of Houston. The former home of the PGA Tour’s Houston Open will host the prestigious women’s event for the first time. As the PGA Tour pros can attest, the Golf Club of Houston will provide a formidable challenge and identify a worthy champion.
The eighth playing of the Women’s Stroke Play Championship will be held at the beautiful Traditions Golf Club in Bryan. 2021 TGA Women’s Player of the Year Emma McMyler will look to defend her title on the demanding Nicklaus-designed layout. Even as a relatively young event on the Women’s schedule, the respect and acclaim given to this championship by the players is evident by the strength of field each year.
As a favorite on the Legends Junior Tour schedule, the 2022 Veritex Bank Byron Nelson Junior Championship at Lakewood Country Club in Dallas will again host some of the state’s rising stars in golf. Lakewood will play host for the 21st time and present a challenge yet again.
As one of the longest-tenured junior events in the state, the Texas Junior Amateur brings out fiery competition between the state’s best up-and-comers. The 96th edition will take place in the rolling hills of Horseshoe Bay Resort on the Apple Rock and Ram Rock Courses.
