Growing up, I was voracious reader of comic books during a time when the medium produced many of its seminal moments. In 1987, DC Comics’ Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli unleashed Batman: Year One—a reimagined origin tale befitting of The Dark Knight—to critical and commercial success.
This issue marks the completion of my “LD+A: Year One” genesis, and I am thankful to those of you who have taken the time out of your busy schedules to speak with me and contribute your thoughts and words to the publication. I am speaking on behalf of the entire LD+A team in saying that we are excited to continue to serve IES Members.
If you are so moved by an article, please consider submitting a “Readers Write” letter to the editor or a “Sightlines” column
As I have become acclimated to the lighting world, most of my interactions have been overwhelmingly welcoming and positive. There have also been a few instances of folks questioning the appropriateness of topics of individual columns and feature articles. For clarity, the focus of LD+A is to provide a glimpse of what is happening in both the industry and IES. The “what is” of reporting is frequently at odds with the varying—and often subjective—“what it should be” views expressed about various news and/or information outlets. Whether or not you agree with a columnist’s perspective or how a project was designed, LD+A is not here to simply affirm a set of agreed upon thoughts and principles; it serves to inform on progress, the differing approaches and gray areas that are navigated as the industry evolves.
With that being said, feedback is important. If you are so moved by an article, please consider submitting a “Readers Write” letter to the editor or a “Sightlines” column. As a nearly 120-year old organization, the IES continues to thrive thanks to its diversity of thought—and varying voices are essential to LD+A’s success.
Inside these pages you will find the “2024 IES Progress Report.” This year saw an increase to 124 submittals and 91 accepted into the report. A salute goes out to the IES Progress Committee, which rigorously evaluates each submission to produce a list of annual achievements that are significant to the lighting industry.
Even Batman, in his own unique way, has acknowledged the progress of illumination, transforming the Bat-Signal from its initial means of communication to something more menacing. As Robert Pattinson’s most recent iteration of the hero stated, “But when that light hits the sky, it’s not just a call. It’s a warning. To them.”
