Ace-Hunting With Pops
Getting your first hole-in-one? Unforgettable. Doing it while playing with your dad on Father’s Day, only to be there for his first ace just four holes later?
That’s what Matthew and Brian Roth experienced at Hillview Golf Course in Vernon, B.C. Neither consider themselves to be super serious golfers, but playing on Father’s Day has become a tradition of theirs, and this year was no different.
Brian’s ace came on the par-3 fourth hole. He made a perfect strike with his 9-iron, sending the ball toward the flagstick with a slight draw. It bounced one time off the front of the green before finding the bottom of the cup.
Matthew was already thrilled to see his dad’s first ace. But not to be outdone, junior grabbed his own 9-iron on the par-3 eighth and took a swing of his own, with his ball, too, one-hopping into the hole. He was using a ball he picked up earlier in the round, that someone had coincidentally marked with the name “Matt.”
Circumstances vary, but the odds of making a hole-in-one are about 12,500 to 1. The odds considering all the Roths’ variables during this particular round are pretty much impossible to quantify, but let’s just say that pigs might be flying before their achievement is repeated.
