I am delighted to share with you the relaunched Casebook Hong Kong in an all-new digital format. Filled with the latest updates, interviews, and medicolegal articles specifically created for our Hong Kong members.
I am writing this editorial while spending time in Hong Kong, where I have the pleasure of launching some exciting changes for Medical Protection members. The changes came about from having celebrated 70 years of Medical Protection in Hong Kong last year and speaking directly with members. We listened to what needs there are, and I am thrilled to share that we recently extended membership benefits for healthcare professionals working in the Greater Bay Area.
In addition to this, for prospective members we heard that it can be difficult to leave a claims-made policy offered by other providers as there can be gaps in cover. Since 1 April 2025, new members can apply for Retroactive Reporting Benefits which provide for a fixed five-year period of protection. This helps provide a seamless transition if you want to join Medical Protection and further details of these new changes can be found on our website or by contacting us directly.
In this edition of Casebook, we share the latest events our Regional Development Director, Joeky Leung, has attended this year. We also hear from our Hong Kong-based Council member, Dr Anthony Fung. Anthony shares how his curiosity led him to a career beyond just healthcare and how his work on Council benefits members in Hong Kong.
We also discuss with our CEO, Karen Miller, a year into her role her reflections and ambitions for MPS, of which Medical Protection is a part. Karen discusses her work so far to support members and highlights the time she recently spent in Hong Kong meeting with colleagues and members.
Our Senior Medical Adviser based in Hong Kong, Dr Danny Lee, dives into the potential risks practitioners face when promoting their practices. We share some of our top tips to be mindful of to avoid scrutiny.
Other articles in this edition include a Hong Kong-based research project, funded by the MPS Foundation, looking at the benefits of patient education. Dr Sarah Townley also discusses managing patient expectations with cosmetic procedures and Peter J Mordecai explores the unchartered territory of AI, medicine, and the law.
The eagle-eyed among you may have also noted a slight change to my job title here at Medical Protection, now the Medical Director and Chief Member Officer. The latter is a new role in which I am part of the Executive team, to which I bring my own clinical knowledge and member experience. The member voice has always been an integral part of Medical Protection, being owned by our members and for our members, and I’m keen to play my part in this to ensure we are always there to support members in the best way possible.
