The 125th U.S. Open Championship had 10,202 entries, with 156 players making it to Oakmont Country Club. Five former Met Area standouts – Max Greyserman, Chris Gotterup, Ryan McCormick, James Nicholas, and Cameron Young – were among those in the field and all five made it to the weekend in Pennsylvania.
Young – a four-time MGA champion and the 2015 MGA Player of the Year – made a valiant run at the title, tallying weekend rounds of 69-70 to earn a career-best tie for fourth in his sixth U.S. Open appearance. Young, who finished at 3-over, was one of just three players to shoot two scores of even-par or better over the final two rounds (Robert MacIntyre, Scottie Scheffler).
Chris Gotterup and Max Greyserman finished alongside one another, tying for 23rd at 8-over-par. Gotterup’s play was highlighted by back-to-back 69s in the second and third rounds, with Friday’s clutch score getting him to the weekend following a 6-over 76 in the opening round. Greyserman also made a big move on Friday, posting a 3-under 67 to match Jason Day as the biggest mover during round two, with both also opening their championships with 76s. Gotterup is now 2-for-2 in making U.S. Open cuts, while Greyserman has made the weekend in two of his three appearances in the national open.
Ryan McCormick and James Nicholas made the cut on the number at 7-over, playing in the morning on Friday and having to wait until late in the evening before knowing they’d have more golf to play. Nicholas opened with a 1-under 69, standing as one of just 10 first-round scores in red figures. Both were making their U.S. Open debuts.
