Golf Westchester: A Tee to Green EncyclopediaBy Dave Donelson

Dave Donelson draws on his more than 20 years of playing and covering golf in Westchester County to write his newest book, which highlights all 51 clubs in the county and combines storytelling with firsthand experience to explore private and public courses. He also provides insight into the business side of golf in the county. Readers learn about the economic impacts of golf in Westchester, the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the role of golf organizations. Donelson is kindly donating the proceeds from the book to the MGA Caddie Scholarship Fund.

“I hope (readers) realize how rich golf is in this county, how much there is to it,” he says. “It’s more than just going out and playing the game. So many important, historical events have occurred (there), where the great players in the game, from the very beginning of the game, have played. That adds so much richness to the sport itself. And hopefully this book will give some insight into that and prompt people to think about it as they visit their club and play the game.”

The Golf Courses of Long IslandBy Peter L. Gray

As a veteran course rater for Golfweek, Peter L. Gray has played hundreds of golf courses across the U.S. and the world, resulting in his 2021 book Golfing the British Isles: The Weekend Warrior’s Companion. That same year, Gray was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. With the help of a skilled surgeon and state-of-the-art immunotherapy, Gray survived and set a goal to write a second book, The Golf Courses of Long Island, in which he profiles his favorite 33 courses of the 128 that call Long Island home. With beautiful photography by Patrick Koenig, Gray weaves together storytelling, course architecture, and history to give readers a peek behind the curtain into some of the most notable clubs and courses on Long Island.

“I decided that I was going to challenge myself to play all the golf courses on Long Island” he says. “Long Island is this incredible time capsule of Golden Age architecture. There’s no place like it in the world other than maybe a couple places in Scotland. I wanted to celebrate what I consider to be sort of the pinnacle of American golf.”

A Course Called HomeBy Tom Coyne

Tom Coyne has traveled the world writing about courses in A Course Called Ireland, A Course Called Scotland, and A Course Called America. But for his latest entry in the series, he stayed put in the Catskills, trying to keep a Golden Age nine-holer, Sullivan County Golf Club, from going under and going from a consumer of golf to a provider with all the joys and problems that entails.

“I think what makes this one different is that in the other stories I was bouncing from place to place and course to course, meeting someone, telling their story, and moving on,” he says. “But in this book, I got to stay in one place for three years and tell the story of a community and a team of people who came together to try and do something unreasonable. I got to see how we changed and how the place changed and how we became a family and a team of dreamers. And this story doesn’t end when I get home. Sullivan County Golf Club is home, so I hope people will come visit and be part of its next chapters.”
