On the Range
Chris Gotterup, who grew up playing golf at Rumson Country Club in Monmouth County, N.J., has had chances to visit Augusta National Golf Club in recent years but never did, preferring to wait till he qualified for the Masters. The 2019 MGA Player of the Year did just that when he won the Genesis Scottish Open last summer and finally set foot on the hallowed grounds in late February, taking his father and brother along with him.
The holes that caught his eye were the downhill second (“With no people there, two green is so wild looking because it looks so massive on TV … (but) it looked much smaller and different”), the straight-away seventh (“Just visually when you step on the tee box you’re like, Wow, this hole is really cool looking”), and the uphill 18th (“The chute on 18 is much tighter than TV gives it credit for”).
He and his brother and dad spent the full day at the club, playing the Par 3 Course and perusing the pro shop, of course, with Gotterup buying his dad and brother gifts, along with his mom, sister, and girlfriend. He also bought himself some playing cards.
If he plays his hand right, he could be getting something from the club that you can’t buy – a green jacket.
