Winged Foot Golf Club, an iconic Met Area course, was listed on the National Historic Landmark in late 2024, but initially received a National Register of Historic Places in 2019. It’s no wonder why it was chosen for such a distinction. This legendary club has hosted six U.S. Opens – with another one set for 2028 – and seven other USGA events since 1929. The course is a symbol of Met Area excellence and Golden Age course design. This photograph features golf icon Bobby Jones at the 33rd U.S. Open held in June 1929. Dressed in typical 1920s golf fashion sporting a tie, knickerbockers, and two-toned leather golf shoes, Jones, deep in concentration, takes a shot out of a bunker. Jones defeated Al Espinosa in a playoff to capture his third U.S. Open trophy.
