His son attends the University of Texas, where he is finishing up his undergraduate work in Psychology. Gary had a wonderful trip to London and the island of Sardinia in 2023, where he enjoyed the Mediterranean Sea and began to research the purchase of a small villa. His wife left the teaching profession when they departed Alaska, and she is now a training developer and instructor for a statewide bank in Texas. They have three cats and a dog in the house. He also cares for seven outdoor cats that were born in the wild, though they’re not so feral anymore. In their spare time, Gary and his wife enjoy trips to nearby South Padre Island National Seashore. Gary is still working out, flying remote-controlled airplanes, and hoping to make it back to the Hill for a class Reunion someday.

Her oldest daughter, Madeline, and her husband, Eric, had a baby in August 2024, and Tara and her husband enjoy being grandparents to Hazel Rose. The new parents moved from Philadelphia to York, Pennsylvania, to be closer to family. Daughter Anna also lives close by. Tara still homeschools the youngest, and she works part time as a registered nurse at a rehabilitation hospital. Most of her free time is spent hanging out with the kids!
Heather Hastings McLaughlin is enjoying retired life in Wyoming. She spends every day riding horseback, hiking, and/or snowshoeing no matter how harsh the weather may be. Last year, she rode over 1,000 miles and hiked almost the same. She stayed close to home and did a few horse camping trips in the Black Hills and one camp trip in Colorado. Suzanne Davie Peters, M.S. ’95 continues to work for Carroll County Public Schools (CCPS) and lives in Westminster, Maryland, with Jim Peters M.S. ’92. They have been in their home for 35 years! After 17 years as a school counselor, Suzanne is now in her third year as a pupil personnel worker. She enjoys supporting students, families, and staff. Jim retired from CCPS in 2021 after 42 years in education! He is keeping busy with many projects and holding down the home front. Their oldest, Emily, was married in 2020 and gave them the first grandchild, a girl, in 2023. Emily’s family lives in the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania, but Suzanne and Jim see them often. Their son Sam teaches music in Carroll County. He and his wife bought a house in Union Bridge in 2023 and had a little boy in September 2024. They very much enjoy the grandparent gig!! Their youngest, Zachary, recently moved to Harrisonburg, Virginia, with his girlfriend. They love the area. Suzanne loves seeing all her Phi Sig/Thirsty Thursday girls, including Gina Graham Moltz, Robyn Catano Dailey, Cherie Thompson Conrad, Roxanne Benjovsky McClanahan, and many others each month. Suzanne and Jim have also started to travel more, taking trips to Europe, Canada, and many places in the U.S. She s not sure how they got to this stage in life so quickly, but they are enjoying it.
Sharon Pierce Reith, M.S. ’92 and David Reith ’87 sold their home in Virginia and downsized to a house in New Market, Maryland, to be closer to their aging parents. They have, however, managed to take a few trips, including to Greece and Iceland. They are also interim care providers for an adoption agency and love it when they have a newborn in the house. Sharon is also volunteering at the school where she first started teaching in 1988, which is really fun. They enjoy hanging out with Jerry Donald ’86, M.S. ’91 and his wife, Bev.
Jonathan Slade is wrapping up his 21st year teaching full time at McDaniel as a professor of Communication & Cinema. In spring 2024, he was awarded a semester sabbatical to start work on a new documentary called “Small Town Press” that features interviews with editors and publishers of local newspapers across Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, and Maine, and examines how they are managing to survive in an increasingly challenging media landscape. In summer 2024, he and his wife, Novia, took an amazing road trip from Maryland all the way to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, to tent camp on Lake Manitoba, attend a CFL Blue Bombers game, and enjoy the Winnipeg Folk Festival — more than 5,000 miles round trip all on electrons! Slade continues to write and publish the Mason-Dixon Surveyor, his free, hyperlocal community newspaper in Lineboro, Maryland, and regularly recruits McDaniel students, faculty, and alumni to submit op-eds and guest commentaries for it, including Lloyd Hart.
Susan Bruder Snow and John have been living in Leesburg, Virginia, for over 18 years now. They live a little outside of town where it s a wonderful combination of convenience and country and they love it! (Cows and horses are across the road and Safeway is a couple of minutes away.) And, yes, her husband’s name is John Snow. “You wouldn’t believe the comments we get just ordering Chinese food!” Their son and daughter are both married and live fairly close, so she gets to see her three grandkids (and counting) — stairsteps at 4, 3, and 2 years old — frequently. Spoiling them is her joy and main focus in life. Susan has been working as a government contractor for over 22 years now and her husband has been retired for over a decade. She’s recently taken up marquetry (wood inlay) and is in the process of setting up a shop in the basement — apparently, her scroll saw is not allowed to touch the woodworking tools her husband has in his separate woodshop. She has also been taking other woodworking and glassblowing classes at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking in Indiana. Have to keep those creative juices flowing! And when she’s not doing all of that, she’s in the garden playing in the dirt — fighting off Japanese beetles on the roses and tending her grandmother’s fig plant.

They love their new life, and she doesn’t miss working one bit. They have met a lot of great new friends. They get together occasionally with Jon Ferber ’85 and his wife, Steph, who live in their community. When not socializing with friends, Laurie plays pickleball, canasta, or does workout classes at the athletic center. She says that you can’t beat the weather there in the winter months. She also keeps in touch with Kathy Murphy Yingling.
As for us, your longtime class reporters: Tracy Buckman Dunne is working hard and playing hard these days. Professionally, she is president and principal broker for a successful real estate brokerage of over 500 agents, and her husband, Matt Dunne ’87, is chief operating officer of Music and Event Management, which books the talent and manages the operation of five concert venues throughout southwest Ohio. When they are not working, they are skiing Park City, Utah; relaxing at their favorite lake in southern Kentucky; exploring the Bourbon Trail; enjoying time with family and friends in Maryland, North Carolina, and Hawaii; or relaxing with David Douglas ’87 and Maria Filshie Douglas ’89 in Aruba.
Susan Scalley Herrold is still hanging around Annapolis, Maryland. In 2023, after 22 years in human resources for Anne Arundel County, she took a new role as central services director for the county. Their daughters, Holly and Kinsey, are now close by so they get to spend time with their seven grandchildren.
