Jerry Hausner
Doug Kent Rytting passed away peacefully on 3 February 2023 at the age of 81 in Reno, NV, USA. He was born on 22 May 1941, grew up in Victor, ID, USA, and graduated from Teton High School in 1959. Then, after serving a mission for his church, he attended Utah State University in Logan, UT, USA, where he received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering plus several prestigious honors.
Upon graduation, Doug went to work for Hewlett-Packard (HP) in Palo Alto, CA, USA, and then earned a master’s degree from Stanford University. He became deeply involved in network analyzers from the point of view of development and applications. He was instrumental in establishing network analyzers as critical measurement devices for RF and microwave measurements. To that end, he developed new error correction and uncertainty analysis techniques. He was a leader in automated measurement technology and contributed to all of the network analyzers produced by HP/Agilent.
The HP instrument group transitioned to the operation in Santa Rosa and became Agilent. Doug devoted 37 years to this field, and during that time, he wrote books and many articles. Additionally, he achieved the status of IEEE Distinguished Lecturer. For this work he received many national awards, recognition, and citations. Even many years after retirement, he received the IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society Microwave Applications Award in 2016.
Besides his technology involvement, he participated extensively in his church activities. He served in any positions that were needed for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He also enjoyed music and played several instruments. Doug will be remembered as a very kind and charitable person. He was always willing to help anyone who needed it. People will also remember his great sense of humor. He was married to his wife, Sharon, for 57 years and is survived by four children and 15 grandchildren.
