However, by the time you read this column, the 2023 IEEE/MTT-S International Microwave Symposium (IMS2023) will have just finished, and so, even though it’s April, I will make a prediction and say that everyone had a great time in San Diego and enjoyed being at the largest microwave symposium and exhibit in the world—in person. In a future issue, we hope to have a recap of IMS2023, where you would have found “The Coolest Ideas Under the Sun.” Next year’s IMS will be in the U.S. capitol, Washington, D.C., and I hope to see you there as well.This July 2023 issue of IEEE Microwave Magazine is a focus issue, in which one of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society (MTT-S) technical committees (TCs), TC-10, the Signal Generation and Frequency Conversion Committee, presents two articles that focus on technologies associated with their topical area. I would like to thank the guest editor, Deukhyoun (Deuk) Heo, not only for organizing the issue but also for preparing the lead-off article [A1] in our technical features portion of the magazine. Deuk has also written the “From the Guest Editor’s Desk” column [A2] for the issue, so I encourage you to read his column to learn more about the features in the issue and also a little bit about the focus area of TC-10. I should also mention that the author of the second feature [A3], Alexander Chenakin, is the current chair of TC-10. Outside of the two focus issue articles, we also have two other technical features. The third technical feature in the issue is by Jonnalagadda, Mishra, and Behera [A4]. The article starts off with a short tutorial on chipless RFID sensors and the material used in sensing various applications and then presents several RFID sensing systems to provide a look at the wide-ranging possibilities of these types of sensors. The final technical feature in the issue, and in keeping with the IMS theme of the recent conference, is an article from the winning team of one of the IMS2022 Student Design Competitions. The article by Fisher et al. [A5] describes the design and implementation of a substrate-integrated, evanescent-mode cavity resonator bandpass filter with dual out-of-band transmission zeros. I encourage you to take a look at the article and the level of work the future members of the MTT-S are investigating. Finally, while not directly a technical feature, we are republishing an article from the James Clerk Maxwell Foundation’s Newsletter on dark matter and how microwaves played a role in its discovery and measurement [A6].Readers of the “President’s Column” each month will undoubtedly notice that the MTT-S president travels extensively to various conferences and events to meet MTT-S members and support the various MTT-S activities. This year’s president, Nuno Borges Carvalho, continues this traveling tradition and describes his recent visit to IEEE Region 9, Central and South America [A7]. Nuno describes his interactions with other IEEE Societies in attendance as well as discussions with representatives from various Region 9 institutions on how to best focus the MTT-S membership activities in the Region. In his “MicroBusiness” column [A8], Fred Schindler discusses the management of engineering teams and how to get the best out of each team member, while also providing a personal perspective on these same skills.Other columns in this month’s issue include the “Microwave Surfing” column’s annual quiz [A9], a new book review [A10], our “New Products” column [A11], and a new “Enigmas, etc.” puzzle [A12] for you to consider.The MTT-S awards many scholarships and fellowships to both graduate and undergraduate students each year, and the most recent winners of these awards are described in the MTT-S Education Committee News [A13]. You can read about these student research projects in detail as well as their institutions and research advisors in this feature. Our “Women in Microwaves” column [A14], authored by Malgorzata Celuch, describes the events at the 2022 International Microwave and Radar Conference held in Gdan´sk, Poland. Malgorzata provides a nice summary of the entire conference and also discusses the “Women in Science and Engineering Matinee” held at the conference. Speaking of conferences, you can see the list of conferences for the next five to six months in our “Conference Calendar” [A15].On a sad note, for the second month, the MTT-S has lost a valued member of our community. Please read about the career and achievements of Doug Rytting in our “In Memoriam” column [A16]. Doug will be missed throughout the Society.
