‘Diamond in the rough’

DeChambeau penalty justified
It appears there is no question about the appropriateness of Bryson DeChambeau’s penalty at the Open (“Rules imbroglio demanded better of Bryson,” July 20, GGP). But I would argue about describing it as “inadvertent,” as it didn’t look that way. When you watch the video three, four or maybe five times, Bryson swings his foot out to gather in the fescue grass and then with it gathered steps down. Much different than lifting and placing your feet vertically to avoid bending, breaking or pushing down live plant material. At the very least it was subconscious behavior.

Bryson unfairly singled out
My issue is that Bryson DeChambeau received different treatment from rules officials than most other players would (“Rules imbroglio demanded better of Bryson,” July 20, GGP). You, me and every level-headed golf fan knows Rory McIlroy or Tommy Fleetwood would never have been penalized. It’s so obvious the dislike of Bryson clouds rational thought.
You are correct that Bryson likes attention. It’s his brand. No matter what you think he should have done, he doesn’t owe anyone an apology.
