Thanks, John Steinbreder, for your story in Global Golf Post about golf on the Outer Banks (“Inner peace on Outer Banks,” February 26 GGP).
My parents (tired of rainy Cape Cod) took us from New Jersey to North Carolina for a summer vacation in 1958, and I went every year until my wife and I sold the beach house we had in the town of Hatteras in the fall of 2019. We live in the Boston area and were finding the long trip a bit too much. Between the house not being used, the roads frequently washed out, the beach eroding, etc., it was time to sell.
When there, however, despite the drive from Hatteras to Kill Devil Hills (and beyond), I did play many rounds at Nags Head Golf Links, Sea Scape, Duck Woods, and The Pointe, so it was nice to read Steinbreder’s report. Next time we’re there (hopefully in the next couple of years), I would like to try Kilmarlic, and maybe stay there as well.
Years ago on Hatteras, we did have a beachside nine-hole course in Frisco (Ocean Edge), which unfortunately fell into a state of disrepair after a hurricane washed out the third hole, which ran along the dune. If you look at a Google map of Frisco, you’ll see the outlines of O.E. just west of the Billy Mitchell airstrip. The Edge had some challenges (such as they were) as you had to hit shots into tiny greens, negotiate some trees and water, and (because of the exposure) the winds that could rip through. But, it was only five minutes from our house, the price was right (I think $15-20, maybe $35 in season), and you would get to meet some locals whom you didn’t already know. And, some of the rounds with kids and neighbors were memorable/priceless.
Anyway, a nice surprise read in GGP.
