After years of gestation, the East-West Matches for American mid- and senior amateurs will take place Nov. 6-8 at Maridoe Golf Club near Dallas.
With the Mississippi River serving as the divide, 18-man teams will comprise six senior amateurs and 12 amateurs, at least 10 of whom will be mid-amateurs, East West Matches tournament committee member Scott Harvey told GGP. In a novel twist, the remaining two amateur spots can go to amateurs who are not yet 25 years old. This is an effort by organizers to introduce young amateurs to the mid-amateur game, should their professional aspirations not play out as hoped.
A customized points system is in place to select half of the teams, and the tournament committee will choose the remaining players. Points tabulation already has begun, and team selection will occur after the 2020 U.S. Mid-Amateur and U.S. Senior Amateur have concluded.
The format for the matches has similarities to the Ryder Cup. It will consist of 18 holes of four-ball play on Friday, followed by 36 holes of foursomes play on Saturday. Sunday will feature 18 singles matches.
Paul Simson will captain the East team and will be assisted by Tim Jackson. Jim Holtgrieve will helm the West team and will be assisted by Kevin Marsh. The captains and their assistants will be non-playing participants, unless they qualify on points or are selected by the organizing committee.
Maridoe, a Steve Smyers redesign, thrust itself onto the national amateur landscape when it hosted the 2019 Trans-Mississippi Amateur Championship. It also will host the 2020 Southern Amateur and the 2021 U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship.
