She played golf at Elon University.
Haley's transition from being a competitive golfer to a golf influencer was driven by her desire to make golf more accessible and inclusive. She realized that there were many barriers preventing women from entering the world of golf, and she wanted to break down those barriers and create a welcoming environment for all golf enthusiasts.
Through her social media platforms and online content, Haley shares her personal experiences, tips, and insights to inspire and empower others to take up golf. Her passion for her work has inspired thousands of girls to get their first set of clubs, sign up for lessons and even pioneer women's golf programs at a local level.
We recently caught up with Haley to have her answer some of the most popular golf questions we get.
Q: What's the worst mistake I can make on a golf course/driving range/pro shop?
HB: Being afraid to make mistakes or ask questions!
Q: Any tips for dressing the part?
HB: I like to think: “What would Elizabeth James from The Parent Trap wear?” And if that’s not specific enough, just stick to three rules:
Q: Is it ok to play without a scorecard at first?
HB: It is absolutely okay to not keep score or even finish out every hole when you first start! Pick up your ball when needed to keep place of play up and do whatever it takes for you to have fun. You did pay to be there, remember?
Q: What gear do I absolutely need to have to start?
HB: To get started in golf, I think a couple hand-me-down/thrifted clubs, golf balls, and some golf shoes is more than enough gear to get your feet wet. Check out Goodwill or Facebook Marketplace for some affordable clubs just to get the swinging motion down - a putter, wedge, 7 iron and driver is all you need.
Q: What gear would help make me feel more comfortable on the course?
HB: As you graduate from the range to the course, you may want to invest in some proper attire (criteria listed above) to make sure you're comfortable and not running into any dress code issues! Other than that, use your thrifted clubs until you feel your swing is outgrowing them and then you can invest in a complete beginner set plus some accessories like a rangefinder and glove.
Q: How do I find my "golf people"?
HB: Join my Facebook Group called "Huge Club Girls" to meet girls in your area who are also interested in golf and wellness.
Q: What kind of golf courses are most welcoming for beginners?
HB: I'm not sure that there's any type of golf course more or less welcoming to beginners. My advice is to approach the game with humility. Don't be afraid to ask staff questions, engage with other players and admit confusion! If somebody isn't so welcoming, that's a them problem. The game does not discriminate and you have just as much of a right to be there as anyone!
Q: Any other unique tips or advice for those looking to feel more comfortable on the golf course or in the sport in general?
HB: Failure is relative. Golf is not designed to be "mastered" or "conquered" but rather a lifelong commitment to accepting the idea of failure. While someone else's failures may look different than yours, I can promise it renders the same frustrations. So don't wait to be "good" to enjoy this game, you'll be chasing that goal to the grave!
