Former University of Alabama standout Nick Dunlap was able to cash a check the second time around.
The 20-year-old, who with his victory at The American Express earlier this year became the first amateur to win a PGA Tour event in 33 years, scored 19 points in the final round to capture the Barracuda Championship in July at Tahoe Mountain Club in Truckee. With his win at the Barracuda, Dunlap became the first player in PGA Tour history to win as both an amateur and a pro in the same season.
“It's kind of neat,” said Dunlap, who finished the tour’s lone Stableford event with a total of 49 points, two better than runner-up Vince Whaley. “It’s really cool. I never thought I’d have my name next to that. It’s definitely an honor.”
In the final round, Dunlap carded seven birdies and an eagle (he’d sink a 55-foot putt), which would have amounted to a 62 had it been stroke play. Between it all, he rocketed 27 spots up the leaderboard.
While he didn’t win any money at The American Express due to being an amateur, this time he pocketed $720,000.
“It never gets old. It really doesn't. I told myself after AmEx I wanted to enjoy the moment a little bit more,” Dunlap said. “The only sour thing is that the winning moment goes quickly. It doesn't stay as long as you may think.”
