Most golf fans know that the winner of the annual Masters tournament at Augusta National receives a green jacket.
But did you know that the NCGA used to award a jacket for winners of its annual NCGA Amateur Championship?
Among the evidence is the 1966 championship at Spyglass Hill, where Vic Loustalot defeated Bernard Magnusson, 3 and 2, in the 36-hole finale.
Following his win, Loustalot was presented with the jacket. Among those on hand to congratulate Loustalot was NCGA Hall of Famer Lawson Little Jr., who won the event in 1928 and 1931, his first title coming at age 18.
Later, Loustalot would compete on the PGA Tour from 1970-1973, his best finish being a tie for third at the 1971 Coral Springs Open.
Said Loustalot of his pro career in hindsight: “I guess if I had been more disciplined, I might have been a better player. But being more disciplined meant there were things I couldn’t do that I enjoyed doing.”
Loustalot’s brother, Gary, went on to become the first head pro at DeLaveaga GC in Santa Cruz.
The legacy of the Loustalots was featured in the Winter 2022 edition of NCGA Golf Magazine.
