The Colorado Golf Association is proud to welcome three outstanding individuals as our 2026 USGA P.J. Boatwright Interns. Representing tournament operations and communications/membership, this year’s class brings a diverse mix of experience, passion for the game, and fresh perspectives to the CGA team.
From Colorado natives to international backgrounds, each intern shares a common goal — to grow the game of golf while gaining hands-on experience in the industry.
Originally from San Antonio, Texas, Jesus Alvarez — who goes by JD — made the move to Colorado in August of 2025. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Finance from the University of Texas at San Antonio and is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Sports Management from Texas Tech University.
JD’s connection to golf began in 2019 while working at a golf course in San Antonio, sparking a passion that has continued to grow ever since. His well-rounded interests outside of work include golfing, video games, fishing, and hiking — making Colorado a perfect fit for his lifestyle.
As a Tournament Operations intern, JD is eager to expand his knowledge of competitive golf and contribute to the execution of CGA championships throughout the season.
Colorado native Vincent Merlo returns home to begin his journey with the CGA after an accomplished collegiate career. Vincent began his college experience in North Carolina at a junior college, where he played baseball before transferring to North Central College to continue both his academic and athletic pursuits.
He recently graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management and a minor in Marketing. During his time in college, Vincent built a strong foundation in the sports industry through roles as a coach, intern, and volunteer with several organizations, including the NCAA.
Having played golf recreationally since childhood, Vincent’s appreciation for the game has grown over time, and he is excited to now be working within the golf industry. He looks forward to contributing to CGA tournaments and learning the inner workings of championship operations.
Darrius Leto brings a global perspective to the CGA as the 2026 Communications & Membership Boatwright Intern. Born in Los Gatos, California, Darrius has spent much of his life living between California and Europe, with his family currently residing in Florence, Italy.
A senior at the University of Colorado Boulder, Darrius has a wide range of interests that include golf, snowboarding, camping, reading, and graphic design. His passion for creativity and communication aligns perfectly with his role, where he will support CGA membership initiatives and storytelling efforts.
Darrius hopes to pursue a future career within the golf industry or in technology and communications consulting. When he’s not working or studying, he enjoys traveling internationally and experiencing new cultures. He’s also a proud dog owner — his black lab, Shadow, has grown from a 13-pound puppy into an 80-pound adventure companion.
Looking Ahead
The Boatwright Internship Program, supported by the USGA, provides aspiring professionals with the opportunity to gain valuable, hands-on experience in all facets of golf administration.
We’re excited to have JD, Vincent, and Darrius on board this season and look forward to the impact they will make across CGA championships, programs, and membership initiatives in 2026.
