American Indian and Alaska Native students in the health professions may be eligible for scholarship support for up to four years from the IHS. A major goal of the program is to encourage young people to serve tribal communities where health care professionals are much needed. The financial support requires a minimum two-year commitment to serve in the student’s area of study within an Indian health program. The IHS offers funding in three categories: Preparatory, Pre-Graduate, and Health Professions. Preparatory scholarships go to undergraduates preparing for careers in clinical psychology, nursing, pharmacy, and social work. Pre-Graduate scholarships are earmarked for undergraduates heading for careers in dentistry, medicine, optometry, and podiatry, while Health Professions scholarships go to graduate students in chemical dependency counseling, counseling psychology, clinical psychology, dentistry, medicine, nursing (including specialty areas of nursing), optometry, pharmacy, podiatry, physician assistant, social work, physical therapy, environmental health/sanitarian, and environmental engineering.
