➜ The MIT Media Lab has named Lehua Kamalu, voyaging director at the Polynesian Voyaging Society, a Directors Fellow, admitting her to a diverse group of innovators and leaders. She was instrumental in designing the sail plan for the traditional double-hulled canoe Hōkūle’a, which successfully circumnavigated the globe. ➜ In November, Dr. John B. Herrington will be inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, the state’s highest honor. A member of the AISES Board of Directors, Dr. Herrington is a retired Navy aviator and NASA astronaut. In 2002, as part of the space shuttle Endeavour mission, he was the first tribally enrolled Native American to walk in space. After retiring, he earned a PhD in education and has focused his efforts on promoting STEM education, especially for Indigenous youth.
➜ The Santa Fe Indian School has dedicated the Everett F. Chavez Pueblo Pavilion in memory of Governor Chavez, who died last December. A former superintendent of the school and three-time governor of Kewa (formerly Santo Domingo) Pueblo, Governor Chavez was a national leader in advancing educational opportunities for Native students. He was also a former AISES executive director and recipient of the Ely S. Parker Award, the highest AISES honor.
➜ Hannah Jimenez is the 2019 salutatorian at Tahlequah High School in Tahlequah, Okla. She is continuing her education at Columbia University in New York City.
➜ An active member of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology AISES College Chapter, Mason Grimshaw was the subject of a feature article in MIT News. Grimshaw earned his BS in business analytics at MIT, where he is currently working toward an MBAn (master of business analytics).
