The 2019 First Nations Launch competition was won by the UCLA AISES rocket team, BEAROSPACE. Prizes for the winning Bruins were $3,000 and a VIP tour of the Kennedy Space Center. The team met the challenge of designing and building a microcontroller that could capture flight data for a high-powered rocket.
The Third Annual Native Links Golf Classic was held on Monday, October 14, at TPC Las Vegas, with all proceeds earmarked to benefit the AISES mission.
We were saddened to learn that Sequoyah Fellow Leslie Qöyawayma died in May in Prescott, Ariz. A strong supporter of AISES, Leslie was involved from the early days of the organization. Along with her husband, Al, a founding member, she hosted early meetings and helped design the AISES logo and conference banners. The AISES family sends condolences to Al and the Qöyawayma family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leslie Qöyawayma Scholarship Fund at aises.org.
On September 27–28, AISES held a Computer Science Research Infrastructure Convening in Chicago at the Hyatt Place/Chicago O’Hare. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the event gathered faculty and those in leadership positions at Native-serving institutions to assess their needs in computer science and related research.
