DTE Energy earns recognition for its commitment to environmental stewardship
DETROIT—Thanks to its work creating pollinator gardens, restoring hundreds of acres of land to its native state and more, DTE Energy has earned the 2018 Corporate Conservation Leadership Award. Given annually by the Wildlife Habitat Council, the award recognizes overall excellence in corporate environmental stewardship.
The WHC partners with corporations, conservation organizations, government agencies and community members to support and recognize wildlife habitat and conservation education programs. Since 1988, the organization has certified more than 1,000 habitat and education programs in 48 states and 25 countries worldwide.
Through the Corporate Conservation Leadership Award, the organization is honoring the breadth of DTE’s achievements on behalf of conservation, its initiatives regarding biodiversity and conservation education, and its commitment to attaining global conservation objectives.
DTE accepted the award at the WHC’s 2018 Conservation Conference in Baltimore.
Skiles Boyd, DTE Energy’s vice president of environmental management and resources, noted that the award recognizes the high level of environmental and community involvement that typifies DTE’s workforce. “These [award-winning] efforts were led by passionate employees who love our land, plants and animals, and who volunteer their time to leave behind a better place,” he said. “DTE employees are national leaders in conservation and environmental protection.”
DTE currently has 36 certified sites in 25 counties—more WHC-certified sites than any other company in Michigan—with additional programs on track for certification by 2020. Those programs include pollinator habitats, bald eagle nests and banding, and conservation projects with K–12 schools throughout the state. —Robert Bittner
