As a child, Todd Turfe, multicultural specialist with Michigan’s DTE Energy, wanted to be a superhero. While many childhood fantasies tend to fade away in adulthood, Turfe found a way to keep his dream alive, and at the same time bring joy to children who desperately need it.
Since 2011, Turfe has volunteered at hospitals across the metro Detroit area, visiting children while dressed as his favorite superheroes. He might not get to save the world, but his biweekly appearances at St. John Providence Children’s Hospital to deliver goody bags and treats are a big hit with the kids.
“The reasons that they’re in there are sad and unfortunate, and when they see me—or Spider-Man—it makes it a better experience for the kids and parents,” said Turfe. “When I show up, it helps them escape reality and forget about what they’re dealing with for those 10 minutes. That excitement always stays with them for the rest of the day.”
Turfe is happy to work for a company that encourages and supports his volunteerism. DTE Energy is even helping him get a new Batman costume, which can take up to five months to create.
“I’m thankful that our company advocates for us to do things like this in the community. It’s the little things like this that can go a long way,” said Turfe. “I’m grateful and fortunate that I get to give back and get to be what I always wanted to when I was growing up.”
