> Start Planning Early
The parade takes place every Thanksgiving morning, starting at 9 a.m. sharp, and lasts approximately three hours. If you’re coming from out of town, book your hotel at least three months in advance. If you’re seeking a room with a view of the parade route, then make reservations at least six months in advance. Popular hotels along the route include the Warwick New York and the New York Hilton Midtown, though you will pay a premium for those during this holiday week. Consider staying anywhere in Manhattan’s Midtown and relying on the convenience of the subway system to bring you to your parade viewing spot. Parking garages and hotels with valet services are available throughout the city. However, it’s best to find parking a few avenues away from the parade route and to reserve your spot ahead of time.
Parade performers practice at Macy’s Herald Square the night before the parade.

> The Parade Route
The parade begins at 77th Street and Central Park West in Manhattan’s Upper West Side neighborhood. The parade then travels south along the west side of Central Park, down Sixth Avenue, and ends at Macy’s Herald Square on 34th Street. Viewing is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and no tickets are available to the general public. The best free spots are the 10 blocks between 62nd and 72nd streets on Central Park West, where crowds are slightly thinner.
Expert tip: This is not the day to explore Times Square or Herald Square; avoid both as they can get congested and are often closed to spectators.
> Wake Up Early and Bundle Up
This might be tough, but to secure a good viewing spot, it’s best to arrive by 6 a.m. It’s early, but when the parade marches by directly in front of you, your early morning is worth it. Come prepared with warm layers, comfortable shoes, snacks, warm drinks, hand warmers and portable phone chargers. Bleacher seating is available only to special guests, so be prepared to stand for several hours.
Inflatables are lined up and waiting for the parade to begin.
> Don’t Miss the Balloon Inflation
Eager to get a sneak peek at the famous floats? Those in the know stop by the Balloon Inflation Event the night before the parade, near the American Museum of Natural History, between 77th and 81st streets. It’s free and family-friendly, running from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
Expert tip: This is a popular event with barricades and a security checkpoint. Arrive early to avoid long lines and crowds.
