Ruth Wilson unravels grave mysteries, past and present
DRAMA Lorna (Wilson) has never recovered from losing her baby when she was only 15—the infant disappeared into Ireland’s notorious Magdalene Laundries and was presumably sold off for illegal adoption. Now Lorna sleepwalks through town at night and, during the day, seems always to be retreating from reality. When she finds a corpse in her house, she can’t even be sure she isn’t responsible. The death, though, will soon be linked to the murder of an elderly priest. This limited series is very dark: The sense of sin is like a crust of barnacles blackening the underside of a rotting ship. (First episode premieres Jan. 21, 9 p.m.)
HULU | Self Reliance COMEDY Writer-director Jake Johnson (New Girl) also stars as Tommy, a dissatisfied man who observes the world with the puzzled shagginess of a dog left out in the rain. Then Andy Samberg (as himself) ropes Tommy into a deadly dark-web reality show. The film is an eccentric, spiky diversion. (Streaming now)
ACTION-COMEDY Kevin Hart plays Cyrus Whitaker, a high-living thief who assembles his crew for a doozy of an assignment: steal $500 million in gold ingots from a jet mid-flight. How do you fit that in overhead? Hart’s air of bemused confidence borders on smug, but the airborne action is fun. (Streaming now)
Kali ReisThe professional boxer and actress, 37, costars with Jodie Foster in HBO’s Alaska-set crime series True Detective: Night Country. How was it working with Jodie Foster?I did fangirl for about 30 seconds when we had our first rehearsal. “Oh my God, she’s here!” It was an honor—she’s a legend in the game. It was like being in training camp with Mike Tyson in ’86.How did you guys not freeze?Heated socks. How did boxing prepare you for an acting career? There’s so many parallels. Boxing is an entertainment business, and you have to put a lot of trust in your team. Do you still get in the ring for fun?I still train—fighters never know when to quit. We’ll see about 2024. Hopefully I’ll be hearing that bell ring one more time. —SCOTT HUVER
