Judy Spain served in numerous roles in ACUHO-I and was the first woman to serve as president of UMR-ACUHO. Spain worked tirelessly through her home campuses and NACURH to continually improve the student experience. She was a mentor to many staff and students, as well as an inspiration to all LGBTQ individuals and their allies. For this reason, her name graces ACUHO-I’s award honoring those who contribute to the LGBTQ community through activities that promote positive growth, development, and education.
Spain passed away in October 2018. In recognition of her outstanding service and long-lasting imprint on the campus housing profession, the ACUHO-I Foundation is proud to announce that it will be honoring Spain posthumously with a Parthenon Award. We are honored to celebrate her legacy and contributions to ACUHO-I and to the profession in this way and look forward to officially inducting her into the Parthenon Society at the ACUHO-I Conference & Expo in Portland, Oregon.
The Foundation is now accepting donations in her honor. Please share this announcement with your colleagues, her former staff, and students who were impacted by her work. And to learn of other nominees, please contact Scott Boden, director of development, at sboden@acuho-i.org. Make your donation online today!
ACUHO-I awarded its inaugural sponsored research grant to the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) based at the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research, an IU School of Education research center. The grant is supporting a three-year study to evaluate how undergraduate students’ residential options –– both on and off campus –– influence their engagement and persistence.
The study combined data from NSSE, the nation’s largest survey of undergraduate experiences, the ACUHO-I Campus Housing Index, and the National Student Clearinghouse to create a comprehensive picture of how students’ living arrangements influence their participation in effective educational practices and their likelihood to persist in college. Access recent findings and papers from the NSSE research team online.
The latest data for the Campus Housing Index are now available. Campuses that completed at least 50% of the Index during the 2019 data collection period (September–December), now have access to basic filtering features by logging into the platform.
