With a wide-ranging mix of excellent amenities for the whole family, The Clubs at Houston Oaks in Hockley offers countless ways for members to engage with nature and with the things they love to do.
Spread out over nearly 1,000 acres of picturesque Texas countryside, Houston Oaks features dozens of diverse clubs and activities from which to choose. Among the club’s many recreational opportunities include golf, tennis, horseback riding, swimming, fitness classes, biking, shooting range, boating, fishing and more. The expansive 30,000-square foot clubhouse is a central gathering spot where members meet to enjoy cultural happenings such as farm-to-table dining, wine tastings, friendly get-togethers or just relaxing on the patio while sipping on a handmade craft cocktail.
For the majority of members, though, the most popular outdoor amenity at Houston Oaks is the new Chet Williams-designed golf course, which in 2020 was ranked by the Dallas Morning News as the second-best course in Texas. (The No. 3-ranked course on the list happens to be another Williams design, Whispering Pines GC in Trinity.)
After a 17-month reimagining and overhaul of the existing property, the modern-day Houston Oaks course was unveiled in 2017. Williams’ stunning 7,007-yard, par-71 layout is framed by groves of centuries-old oak trees, natural water features and vast native areas. With six sets of tee boxes, a wonderful variety of long and short holes, doglegs, rolling fairways and large green complexes, Houston Oaks is a fun and challenging experience for players of all ages and abilities.
For those learning the game – and for those looking to hone their skills or just have some fun – Williams also designed a state-of-the-art practice facility and nine-hole course called “The Scrambler.” Located next to the club’s on-site hotel, just north of the main clubhouse, the practice facility has a driving range, authentic greens and bunkers where players can work on their long and short game shots.
The Scrambler consists of seven par 3s and two par 4s, varying in length from 114-384 yards, making the course a perfect spot for beginners and families, as well as avid golfers.
The Clubs at Houston Oaks’ owners and members are justifiably proud of their extraordinary facility and are committed to supporting amateur golf. In 2018, the club welcomed its first Texas Golf Association championship when it was the site of the 16th annual Texas Shootout, an elite team match play event between the top 12 players from North and South Texas.
This year, Houston Oaks will welcome the Legends Junior Tour’s Jackie Burke Cup from Nov. 14-15. Established in 2005, the Jackie Burke Cup is a Ryder Cup-style competition for the state’s best junior golfers age 18 and under. Similar to the Texas Shootout, the format for the Jackie Burke Cup features the top 12 players from North and South Texas (eight from Boys 15-18 Division, two from Boys 14 & Under Division and two from Girls 12-18 Division), competing in four-ball, foursome and singles matches over two days.
“The Legends Junior Tour is excited and fortunate to bring the Jackie Burke Cup to The Clubs at Houston Oaks,” LJT Tournament Director Kevin Porter said. “The course is always in fantastic condition and the strategic layout lends itself to match play excitement, which will make for a special weekend.”
At the 2019 Jackie Burke Cup held at Wichita Falls Country Club, the North Texas Team defeated the South Texas Team, 34-14.
