Congratulations to Jason Lee from Lindale! He was the grand prize winner in our first-ever Golf Fit Challenge! Jason logged 516,268 steps and 19 rounds of golf in the month of March. He scored a total of 706,268 points and won a year of free golf in our Fun Golf Series.
We launched the Golf Fit Challenge in February and invited all TGA Members, social media fans and followers to track their steps during the month of March. We awarded bonus points for rounds of golf played and posted to their GHIN accounts. The top three finishers were awarded one of three prizes: free golf for a year, an Excel GPS Rangefinder and a TGA Swag Bag.
To our surprise, 340 people accepted the Golf Fit Challenge!
During the month of March, we posted weekly leaderboards that showed the Top 10 Golf Fit Challengers. Jason fought his way through the challenge, bouncing from 3rd place early on, then falling to 9th place at one point, before he ultimately won.
“I enjoyed the challenge, and every week when the rankings came out it made me work hard to step it up to win the challenge,” Jason said. “It definitely made me hit the golf course a lot more, and it helps that I live on the course. I love being outside and the challenge pushed me to the limit.”
Thomas Cruickshank finished in second place with 677,977 total points. For his efforts, he won a Bushnell Excel GPS Rangefinder watch.
“I think I was looking for an excuse to get more exercise in,” Thomas said. “This challenge gave me that little extra push. I enjoyed the sense of accomplishment and the extra walking while golfing. I lost 5 pounds throughout the challenge, and the only thing I changed was the walking during my rounds. I’m not positive the walking helped my actual game, but I did find myself enjoying the round more.”
Shannon Krause took third place with 646,790 points.
“I love challenges, and I thought it would be fun,” she said. “My favorite part was seeing my name at the top of the leaderboard twice! During the challenge I pushed myself to walk as much as I could. I probably averaged an extra 1,500 steps a day. I wish I could have gotten some golf in too; but my schedule didn’t allow it.”

The Lone Star Golf team, as well as the entire TGA staff, was extremely pleased with the participation numbers and overall success of this venture. We had no idea our members would be so eager to compete in our Golf Fit Challenge!
“I received an email from the Texas Golf Association for the Golf Fit Challenge, and I immediately signed up,” Jason said. “My employer does step challenges all the time and it is a great way to get people involved with staying healthy.”
Another thing that really surprised us was the collective total number of steps logged by everyone who participated. As a group, the Golf Fit Challenge contestants logged 13,064,162 total steps! We’re so proud of all of you, and we’re certain many fitness goals were crushed.
