The 2010 National Games included Rhythmic Gymnastics. Neither Artistic Men’s or Women’s gymnastics was offered. Cindy Bickman was the Technical Delegate and I was a judge. Athletes competed individual and group routines. Local gymnasts were invited to a workshop to learn a group routine, and they performed as Unified Partners with the Special Olympics gymnasts. A local sponsor donated t-shirts so each team was a different color.
At this competition, the tradition of the hair and makeup salon began. Ana DeMello, the mother of an athlete, set out on a mission to raise the standard of gymnastics presentation. She brought makeup, hair accessories, and the athlete favorite, glue on rhinestone earrings. One of the police ladies even joined in and made buns for several athletes.
Competition at the Games was a testament to the dedication of coaches in the US. The athletes were well trained and performed as champions!
