These were the games of “Sport, Spirit, and Splendor” according to one article. Gymnastics was held in the New Haven Coliseum. Many of the athletes were housed at Yale University. There were 370 gymnasts from around the World. Both Rhythmic and Artistic Men’s and Women’s competitions were held during the week. USA Gymnastics both supported and endorsed the competition. Paul Ziert wrote in International Gymnast Magazine, “I must tell you that I was impressed with the organization and cooperation which permeated this event.”
Culminating the competition, on Friday, July 7, we held a gym show that was open to everyone to view. Special Olympians were chosen by the judges to perform as well as celebrities- Nadia Comenici, Bart Connors, Trent Dimas,& Vitaly Scherbo. Sean Simpson (Shawna Simpsonova) provided a comedy act on several pieces of equipment. A group rhythmic routine also contributed to the festivities.
Jennifer Mohr, a rhythmic gymnast from New Jersey, was quoted as saying, “The opening ceremonies and exchanging pins with people from all the different countries are the best parts.” Besides competing, that is…
