At SDFCU, we encourage our members to think ahead. Naming a payable on death (POD) beneficiary allows your funds to pass directly to the individual or individuals you choose — without the delays and costs of probate. It's a strategic move that helps ensure your money is delivered to the intended recipient(s), smoothly and efficiently.
A POD designation lets you name one or more beneficiaries to receive the funds in your account after your passing. Until then, you remain in full control of the account. It’s about more than convenience —it’s a smart layer of financial security.
Without a POD beneficiary, your account could become entangled in the probate process, delaying access for those who may need it most. By naming a beneficiary, your loved ones can access the funds significantly faster.
Updating your POD beneficiaries is one of the easiest ways to safeguard your finances and provide clarity to those you care about. To add or update a POD beneficiary to your SDFCU account within Digital Banking:
Log in to Digital Banking and navigate to the section titled “Manage Beneficiaries.”
Click on “Add Beneficiary” and input the desired recipient’s legal name and address.
While not required, adding their date of birth and social security number is recommended to ensure the funds are delivered to the correct person.
To add multiple beneficiaries, repeat step 2 for each individual.
Estate planning can feel overwhelming, but this simple step will ensure your wishes are met in the future. Whether you’re just getting started or revisiting an existing estate plan, SDFCU is here to help you make informed financial choices.
