Dating from the 15th century, At-Turaif was the first capital of the Saudi state and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The epic scale and historical significance of the ancient district of At-Turaif are brought to life after dark in a layered and nuanced tapestry of soft rose-gold light that reflects the spirit of this living national monument. The surfaces, façades, streets, and courtyards that shape the most important views and experiences have been articulated in a palette of varying light intensities. The mud-brick glows, lit from below in a shade of golden light, while subtle tonal variations evoke the flickering lantern light of ancient times.
To address the project’s significant scale and consider multiple viewpoints both near and far, a full drone scan was employed alongside real-life mock-ups to model effects for approval from all stakeholders. To avoid damage and preserve the sense of authenticity, equipment is secured on semi-recessed concrete footings hidden behind color-matched shields that blend seamlessly into the building fabric. While designed with a natural, timeless feel, once per month, blue light on the exterior marks the new moon, reflecting the lunar calendar's importance in the Muslim faith.
