Father Time remains undefeated. As we age, it’s only natural to dedicate our focus on personal health and wellness issues. I would like to think that for many of us, there is also an increase in empathy, which often results in aiding people both inside and outside of our immediate familial and social spheres.
Back in 2018, I began volunteering at an Autism Family Surf Day event. Along with having a personal connection to the organization’s mission, and having surfed for decades, I felt it was a great opportunity for my family to get involved with an activity that is incredibly beneficial for both physical and mental well-being. You quickly learn that each child’s comfort zone is different—the brightness of the sun; sounds and sensations of the sand, water and waves; and the buoyancy of the surfboard may be significant challenges. The courage of these kids is on display each year: some stand and ride the waves while others float, bellies-down on boards while stretching their hands out to feel the energy of the ocean. Faces light up on both the surfers and volunteers—it’s a transformative experience of positive energy throughout the entire day.
“The focus on light and wellness continues to feature prominently at the IES.”
Light and wellness initiatives also focus on overcoming unique hurdles while serving a similarly compassionate purpose. In this issue of LD+A, we highlight Massachusetts’ Veterans Home at Chelsea, which was designed to address the emotional and social well-being of its residents, many of whom battle age-related illnesses and physical limitations. The facility’s illumination contributed to the creation of comfortable and inviting living areas that encourage social interaction and help maintain the veterans’ mental acuity and clarity.
The focus on light and wellness continues to feature prominently at the IES. During IES24: The Lighting Conference in New York City, IES Executive Director Colleen Harper answered a slate of questions while putting her own health and wellness in the crosshairs during a scorching Hot Ones-inspired hot-wing gauntlet. While choking down a 3 million-Scoville, Pepper X-based sauce, she said, “I think it is incredibly important...for our industry to have a closer alignment and collaboration with the medical and healthcare community. The light impact on health and wellness…is something that is the next paradigm shift that impacts everything including the Department of Energy, the Department of Health, the Department of Education—across the board.”
