With the help of diabetes care and education specialists from across the nation, from different disciplines and practice settings, ADCES has created a toolkit that is designed to help you effectively communicate the value of your services to 3 main audiences:
Administrators
Prescribers
People living with diabetes in your community.
We’ve divided this into sections. Each one includes diabetes care and education specialists sharing their perspectives, success stories, lessons learned, and resources.
Here’s just one of the many pieces of advice included in this toolkit:
You hear that budget cuts are coming, or you may even be asked to defend your program. How do you prepare? Here are some tips:
Never have the conversation via phone or email. Set up a face-to-face meeting. This buys you time and lets you gather your thoughts and data.
Know your audience. Understand who you’ll be talking to and what they are interested in. What do you know about them and their personality? This will help you deliver your information in a way they expect and will be more receptive to. For example, if they are a “cut to the chase” type of person, be prepared to be succinct and share only key details they are interested in knowing.
Look for clues. Look through your health system’s annual report. Notice the buzz words and what the report emphasizes. Tell them what you want in the language they use and address what they are most interested in.
Put yourself in their shoes. They need to show a profit, so focus on how your program either increased revenue or saved expenses. Reimbursement is just part of your value. You should also know how your program impacts costs, quality measures, and readmission rates. Use these data to tell your story!
Be concise. You may only have 10 minutes. Use it wisely.
BE PREPARED!
This new toolkit shares plenty of advice but then also takes the next step and provides additional materials, such as sample follow-up letters and real-life stories from those who have successfully promoted their program.
