Content should appear in the sequence in which it is intended to be read. Elements that are set apart from the main text flow, such as sidebars and tables, should be placed in the location where they are meant to be read. If content, such as a sidebar, does not fit within the larger article in a logical way, it will come at the end of the main body of content, or else it should be designated as a separate article or “raft”.
Please be sure to provide a table of contents spreadsheet along with your files to ensure that your content is organized properly within PageRaft. This may need to be more extensive than a print TOC as some elements, like a lengthy sidebar, might need to appear as a separate raft (article) within the accessible digital edition. The meaning of the content should be derived primarily from the meaning and context of words and phrases used. Emphasis or importance should be indicated wherever possible within the writing itself, not relying on visual-only cues such as colored text, font size, or positioning. Text should not be presented as an image.
PageRaft endeavors to maintain the character and branding of your publication’s design whenever possible while adapting it to a responsive environment. Much of this is accomplished through the use of color. Therefore, when designing it is important to consider the ways in which your color choices affect accessibility. Color should not be used as the only visual means of conveying information, indicating an action, prompting a response, or distinguishing a visual element.
This is especially important to recognize when designing any portion of text that uses a unique color scheme. Be sure to check the effectiveness of your color contrast against accessibility standards using tools such as this one.
Make sure your main text color provides enough contrast with the background color. Primary body copy should have a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1, while large and bold text can have a contrast ratio of 3:1.
