This year will mark the first time the Ryder Cup will be held at a Long Island course, but it's not its first time in the Met Area. Back in 1935, during the Great Depression, Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, N.J., hosted the event. The American team, led by captain Walter Hagen, defeated the then British-only team by six points. Pictured here on the 16th green is American Olin Dutura (winner of the 1932 Met Open held at Lido Golf Club) shaking hands with Alfred Padgham after winning 4 and 2 in the Sunday singles. The crowd, presumably mostly American, all watch with smiles and excitement in their Depression-era outfits. This event marked the Americans’ third win on home turf and the start of a 20-year win streak.
