Highlights from fall events on the MGA’s calendar of competitions.
On a breezy day at Laurel Links Country Club, Hunter Jones of Burning Tree carded an even-par 72 to secure the wire-to-wire victory in the 19th MGA Mid-Amateur Championship. Jones entered the day with a one-shot lead and won by the same margin, edging out Sam Bernstein of Century by one shot with a two-day total of 3-under par. Recap
The MGA team was victorious at Portmarnock Golf Club in Dublin, Ireland, in October, capturing the 18th edition of the Carey Cup against Golf Ireland. The MGA was represented by (above, first row, left to right) Hana Ku, Corinna Limbocker, Rayee Feng, Catherine McEvoy, Ina Kim-Schaad, (back row, left to right) Captain Ned Zachar, Adam Friedman, Brad Tilley, Matt Lowe, Darin Goldstein, Chris DeJohn, Christian Cavaliere, and Mark Costanza. The impressive 12.5 – 9.5 victory is just the second time the MGA has claimed an outright win on foreign soil in the matches. Recap
A new trio of champions were crowned at The Stanwich Club in September, as Johnny Spellerberg of Omaha Country Club, Lauren Greenlief of International Country Club (Fairfiax, Va.), and Kevin VandenBerg of Beaver Meadow Golf Club added their names to the Farrell trophy. Recap
MGA eClub New York City members Kenneth Li (right) and Kevin Li fired a net 12-under 60 at The Seawane Club to win the 1st MGA/MetLife Double Championship. The pair took the Men’s title as well, while three other duos came away with division titles in the net championship:
Women’s Division: Charlotte Daughan, MGA eClub – CT, and Elizabeth Barnes, Pound Ridge
Mixed Division: Harris Chang and Savannah Thompson, USGA/MGA Golf Cub
Senior Division: Andre Bolukbas, Spook Rock, and Patrick Pierson, Hollow Brook
The MGA/MetLife Doubles Championship replaced the MGA’s Four-Ball Championships, shifting from the four-ball format to a two-person, better shot (scramble) format. The format allows for more wide-ranging, inclusive playing opportunities, as teams may be comprised of two men, two women, or a man and woman (mixed), as well as senior players. Recap
Arwen Xu Dong, 13 of USGA/MGA Golf Club, and Yiwen Wang, 18 and a Youth on Course – MGA member, delivered a dominant performance at Cold Spring Country Club, firing a stellar 7-under 64 to capture the 61st MGA/WMGA Mixed Pinehurst Championship. In the Net Division, Scott Bloom and Elizabeth Wallen of Lake Success Golf Club and Muttontown Club posted an impressive 8-under 63 to take top honors. Meanwhile, the Professional Division was won by Cold Spring’s own Jane Sirmons and John Laruffa, who carded a 1-under 70. Recap
Anthony Fioretti of Newton Country Club captured the 14th MGA Senior Masters Tournament at Anglebrook Golf Club in October, carding a 1-under 71. A couple of birdies late in his round helped him capture his first MGA victory. Recap
