The Dye family and South Carolina have a rich history, starting with Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island in 1969. Located just up the coast, Fripp Island continues the association. What was once a secluded hunting and fishing retreat in the first half of the 20th century is now an off-the-beaten-path residential and resort community. Since its opening in 1964, Ocean Point Golf Links has been the centerpiece of Fripp Island Golf and Beach Resort. The George Cobb design is known for its five ocean-view holes; small, well-bunkered greens; and Lowcountry vistas.
To modernize the layout, the mother-son architect team of Cynthia Dye McGarey and Matt McGarey gave every hole a significant design upgrade, improving both the visual appeal and playing experience. The renovation included the addition of new fairway and greenside bunkers and the reshaping of more than 50 others. They also added 5.5 acres of waste area, constructed native dunes, and planted more than 13,000 native plants.
The resort is also home to the Davis Love III-designed Ocean Creek course, which features five holes edged by marsh and another six holes incorporating interior wetlands, all preserved and connected through a network of wooden walkways and bridges.
