A Scottish Open victory for Chris Gotterup while squaring off against Rory. A dominating performance for Cameron Young in his first PGA Tour victory in the Wyndham Championship. Both Gotterup and Young finishing top-10 in the year-end Tour Championship. These moments provided plenty of excitement for Met Area golf fans, but plenty still lies ahead after Young got the nod to compete in the Ryder Cup for the U.S. squad at Bethpage Black, September 26-28.
And of course, Young has plenty of positive memories to feed off at Bethpage’s famed Black Course. In 2011, at the age of 14, Young helped the MGA to an international victory of its own at Bethpage Black, defeating Golf Ireland in the Carey Cup. Fast forward to 2017 and Young became the first amateur to win the New York State Open, firing a then-course record 64 in the final round before taking the title in a playoff.
The venue continues to stand as a favorite for Young.
“It's kind of that major championship style difficult, and I think that that suits my game, and I'm always excited to go back there,” said Young. “It's one of my favorite places in the world.”
While Young certainly has never seen the Black as it will be during Ryder Cup week – with New York and Met Area fans lining the fairways – the stakes and scenario will no doubt serve as a special homecoming for Young.
