Dear McDaniel Community,
Education has always held a very special place in my life, with many of my earliest memories revolving around the joy of learning something new. My grandmother, an elementary school teacher and my lifelong role model, was the first to ignite my passion for the special relationship between teacher and student. Growing up, I delighted in playing “school,” a pastime that my parents wholeheartedly supported by transforming our back porch into a miniature classroom. With vintage school desks and an eager group of neighborhood children, it became a cherished space where my love for teaching and learning continued to blossom.
It is both a privilege and a profound joy to now lead an institution renowned for shaping exceptional educators. McDaniel College has a long-standing tradition of preparing teachers who leave an indelible mark on their students and communities. Over the past 15 years, more than 30 McDaniel graduates have been named County Teachers of the Year, with four achieving the prestigious distinction of Maryland Teacher of the Year. Equally inspiring, over 90% of our Education graduates remain dedicated to their profession, teaching in classrooms for at least five years after graduation — a testament to the enduring impact of their McDaniel experience. Building on this legacy of excellence, McDaniel continues to innovate and expand its programs to meet the evolving needs of the educational landscape.
This issue of The Hill highlights the transformative power of education within our community and beyond. The stories within these pages celebrate the remarkable efforts of McDaniel alumni, faculty, and staff as they work tirelessly to shape the future of education. Through their dedication, they are not only enhancing the lives of countless students but also embodying the very essence of the college’s mission.
As you read these stories, I hope you feel the same sense of pride and optimism that I do for the work being done by our McDaniel family. Together, we continue to honor the legacy of education as a force for good, one that uplifts individuals and strengthens communities.
Warm regards,
President Julia Jasken
