India to invest billions to develop a domestic green H2 ecosystem, including export terminals
In early October, India’s renewable energy ministry announced plans to commit approximately $4 B to commercialize a green H2 ecosystem in the country. The ministry’s roadmap focuses on developing infrastructure, materials and technologies to help boost green H2 production and distribution in India.
Around the same timeframe, the country’s shipping and port ministry designated three ports to act as green H2/ammonia and green methanol export terminals: Kandla, Paradip and Tuticorin. The country aims to export 5 MMtpy of green H2 and derivatives by 2030—this ambitious goal aligns with India’s National Green H2 Mission.
Phase 1 begins on Allied Green Ammonia’s $8.5-B Australian green ammonia project
Allied Green Ammonia and Tecnicas Reunidas have agreed on terms to pave the way for Phase 1 activities of the company’s $8.5-B green ammonia project in Australia’s Northern Territory. Tecnicas Reunidas will conduct basic engineering design and front-end engineering and design (FEED) work on the project. These phases will be followed by detailed engineering, procurement and construction management.
Once operational in 2028, the facility will produce 165,000 tpy of green H2 and more than 912,000 tpy of green ammonia.
Hanwha to install ammonia cracking plant to feed local power plant
Hanwha Impact Corp. will use KBR’s H2ACT technology to develop an ammonia cracking plant in Daesan, South Korea. The plant will convert ammonia back into H2, which will be used as feedstock for a nearby power plant that is to be built. As part of the contract, KBR will provide the unit’s technology licensing and proprietary engineering design. Once operational, the plant can deliver more than 200 tpd of H2 to the proposed power plant.

ATCO Mining announces H2 storage estimates of its Flat Bay project
ATCO Mining has completed a H2 storage assessment for its Flat Bay Salt project in Newfoundland and Labrador. The study was completed by RESPEC Consulting. The firm’s study generated preliminary cavern layouts and performed high-level thermodynamic calculations to estimate the maximum H2 storage capacity of the salt structure at the Flat Bay project site. According to RESPEC Consulting’s work, the Flat Bay salt structure can potentially contain approximately:
The project’s next steps include ATCO Mining drilling exploratory core wells and running additional seismic surveys to confirm the depth and thickness of the salt structure.

Green Energy Park to develop massive green ammonia production facility in Brazil
In mid-October, Green Energy Park signed a Letter of Intent with the Brazilian state of Piaui for a potential 5-GW green ammonia production facility and export terminal. At the time of this publication, the JV had launched a feasibility study that would see the production facility export up to 5 MMtpy of green ammonia. No additional information on the potential final investment decision (FID) is available.

Lhyfe to build H2 production plant in Germany
Lhyfe has announced the start of construction on a H2 production plant in the German city of Schwäbisch Gmünd. Once commissioned in 2H 2024, the facility will use renewable power to produce green H2 which will be used in the H2-Aspen industrial park and at a JET H2 filling station in the area. The Schwäbisch Gmünd H2 production plant is part of the H2 for Innovative Vehicles (HyFIVE) project, supported by the European Regional Development Fund.
Hive Energy moves H2/ammonia production plant into pre-FEED
Hive Energy Ltd. has awarded thyssenkrupp Uhde a contract to conduct pre-FEED activities on the company’s H2 and ammonia production plant in Spain. According to thyssenkrupp Uhde, pre-FEED activities include enhancing the technical concept and commencing key engineering activities for the plant.
Galp awards contract for Sines refinery project
Galp has awarded Technip Energies an engineering, procurement services and construction management contract for its nearly $690-MM advanced biofuels and green H2 facility at the Sines refinery in Spain. The advanced biofuels unit will produce 270,000 tpy of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel from biofeedstock and waste residues.
The project also includes the construction of a 100-MW electrolysis plant to produce up to 15,000 tpy of H2. This unit will replace approximately 20% of the refinery’s gray H2 consumption, significantly decreasing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
H2NorthEast H2 project begins FEED activities on its UK project
Kellas Midstream has awarded two contracts for its H2NorthEast H2 project in Teesside, UK. Phase 1 includes the construction of a 355-MW H2 production facility and distribution system. A second phase would scale up production capacity to more than 1 GW by 2030, if needed. The contracts awarded include:
Kellas intends to take FID on the project in 2025, with commercial operations beginning in 2028.
EET Hydrogen commences FEED for its HPP2 plant
In late September, EET Hydrogen announced that its 1,000-MW HPP2 project in the UK had commenced FEED activities. The facility—located at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex—will use KBR’s blue H2 process technology. Once operational, the facility will produce 230,000 tpy of low-carbon H2 for local industrial and power generation customers.

U.S. Department of Energy awards billions for regional H2 hubs
In mid-October, the U.S. Department of Energy awarded more than $7 B to seven U.S. regional H2 hubs. These hubs will produce more than 3 MMtpy of clean H2. The hubs selected and possible funding include:
Air Liquide, Trillium partner to boost heavy-duty H2 fueling market
Air Liquide and Trillium have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop the heavy-duty H2 fueling market in the U.S. The JV will concentrate on building the region’s H2-fueling infrastructure by deploying an extensive H2 retail network. The JV’s goal is that the additional infrastructure will expedite the rollout of more H2-fueled, heavy-duty trucks. Phase 1 includes developing 150 tpd of H2 and the refueling infrastructure capable of supplying more than 2,000 heavy-duty vehicles.
OCI to double green methanol capacity in the U.S.
Due to increasing demand for green methanol from high-emissions industries, OCI Global has announced plans to double green methanol production capacity in the U.S. to 400,000 tpy. The additional green methanol will help decarbonize the transportation and marine shipping industries. According to the company, green methanol market demand is expected to reach 6 MMt by 2028 due to the adoption of green methanol as a marine shipping fuel—more than 225 dual-fueled methanol vessels have been ordered.
