GCCISD Cross Country athletes are prepped and ready for an exciting 2023-2024 season. Students from across the three traditional high school train competitively to compete at the highest level.
Special to the News: Athletics Department
In case you haven’t heard, we have some extremely talented and successful runners here in Baytown. Although they may not get the attention they deserve, they have continued to grind it out during the fall cross country seasons.
In 2021, the district cross country meet was held in La Porte. All three of our high schools competed in this qualifying meet to earn the opportunity to run at the Region III meet in Huntsville. It wasn’t any surprise to our head coaches, that GCM, Lee and Sterling students qualified and proved that the district could compete at a high level.
To qualify for the regional meet, the athlete must either place in the top 10 individuals or place as a top three team. Team points are tallied by the order of finish for the top five team finishers, and the places are determined based on low scores.
Fast forward to this past year, and Goose Creek High schools continued to shine once again. Sterling men, GCM men, and GCM women all sent their teams, along with individuals to the regional meet, where they took it one step further.
Sterling’s Brock Glasscock, who narrowly missed the State meet the year prior, was able to secure his spot in the 2022 State Championships by placing seventh out of 179 runners. He represented his community extremely well by placing 37th out of 151 of the best runners in the entire state. This feat was made less than a year after another Sterling runner, Cameron Chin, won a state championship in the 400-meter at the 2022 UIL track and field State championships.

GCM Head Women’s Cross Country Coach
Coach Roman Huizar, Head Women’s Cross Country Coach at GCM, stated, “GCCISD Cross Country has grown over the last few years and has become very competitive in the region,” Huizar said. “Last year, we had three programs advance to the regional meet and we hope to do even better next year.”
All three schools have plenty of young, eager runners this year and the Athletics department has plans to continue to showcase our student athletes at the highest of levels. We would expect nothing less than to have all three schools represented once again at the regional meet, with hopes of sending more to the state level.
